The Inner Scream: Sullivan is right about the high journalistic achievement of this cover. But shouldn't they all have laptops? ... P.S.: The people I've felt most sorry for are the journalists who have to pretend they are excited by the inauguration and Bush's second term. NPR personalities in particular. You can hear the inauthenticity and desperation in their voices. ... As far as I know, none of them have yet tried to cover any Bush festivities from the sanctuary of the FDR memorial--where an All Things Considered correspondent wound up fleeing, on air, during last year's Reagan ceremonies. The 'Don't Tell Mama' Voters
This isn't a serious list. It would allow immediate legalization of all current illegal immigrants, as long as it stopped short of full "citizenship." Meanwhile we wouldn't find out if Hugh's "tamper-proof ID" and double-fence and increased fines actually worked until the next wave of illegals--smart enough to realize that those in the previous wave had just been amply rewarded-- tested them. ... P.S.: I suspect Hewitt's spooked** about the inevitablity of an "amnesty light" bill passing. See Kate O'Beirne for the contrasting assessment. (She stresses that "border security — not amnesty — was popular on the campaign trail last year.") It's entirely possible a bill will fail because it's opposed from both sides--by anti-amnesty conservatives and pro-amnesty pols who think it doesn't go far enough. More>>

Good books on digital photography
There are many good digital photography books available in the market today. Not only are there updated versions of traditional classics (like Bryan Peterson's Learning to See Creatively ), but there are a mountain of books from people who grew up with Adobe Photoshop and waited, sometimes impatiently, for digital cameras to come of age. Two books that I have found to be especially good are Scott Kelby's The Digital Photography Book ($20, Peachpit Press), and Complete Digital Photography , from Ben Long ($40, Charles River Media). If you're looking for a different type of book on the topic, however, it's worth seeking out Stephen Johnson on Digital Photography ($40, O'Reilly), which recently made it to the top of my reading pile. The book is part history, part photographic philosophy, and part tutorial, all delivered in Stephen's inimitable style. More>>
