  • ( ) Kindle that reading glow

E-books made their debut about a decade ago, with confident predictions that paper pages would soon be considered quaint. Imagine a device called a "reader," about the size of a Danielle Steele novel, which could hold up to 20 volumes. The text was downloaded from the publisher to a personal computer, and then to the reading device, where one could adjust the font size and glare to one's individual need or taste. The industry was abuzz: No less a luminary than Stephen King published an e-novel, to great fanfare. "In 10 years," I heard one e-publisher say, while hoisting a traditional volume, "what need will anyone have for this?"

Hubris has its cost, and e-publishing lost that round. And the next, and the next, as the future never did seem to arrive. Last year's Sony Reader debuted in time for Christmas (how many debuts did that make?) and failed to revolutionize the reading habits of America. More>>

  • ( ) Will stone-age saga be next hit?

While publishers inevitably cast about for the "next J.K. Rowling," most aren't holding their breath.

The odds-on favourite might be Michelle Paver, author of Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, a continuing, six-part saga set during the Stone Age.

Paver, a 47-year-old graduate of Oxford University, received a $3.5 million advance in 2003 to write the books. Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and the forthcoming American Gangster, opening tomorrow, has optioned the entire series.

Mind you, Paver has eschewed all comparisons to the creator of Harry Potter.

"I'm not the next J.K. Rowling," she told England's Guardian newspaper earlier this year.

"We've got one already. It's flattering to be compared to her. I like her books and loved the first three particularly, but apart from the fact that they've got boys as heroes, they're very different."

  • ( ) Information gap

ACCORDING to people who answer MTS cellphone users' 411 calls, one of my sisters does not exist.

Neither does a dentist who has had a practice in this city for more than 30 years, a local number for Manitoba Hydro, or a little tourist attraction called The Forks. You might have heard of it.

The Forks, Manitoba Hydro, Dr. M.W. Kohn and my sister are all listed in the white pages, as these people and institutions are very, very real. Anybody capable of flipping through a phone book can find their names and numbers and even call them if they feel the need.

But when you're walking down a Winnipeg street with an MTS cellphone -- or driving in your car -- you probably aren't toting around the white pages book, which only weighs a few hundred grams but isn't exactly a convenient travel accessory. More>>
