Judith Jones Toasts a Culinary Life in 'Tenth Muse'
The year was 1959, the end of a decade when the food industry's "prevailing message was that the poor little woman didn't have time to cook, and, moreover, it was beneath her dignity," Judith Jones writes in her compact memoir, The Tenth Muse. But Jones, then a young editor at Alfred A. Knopf, viewed food differently. Born with what she calls a "fluke gene" that allowed her to take pleasure in food — even in a household that banned garlic — she was on the hunt for an authentic French cookbook. That's when Julia Child's thick manuscript landed on her desk. "I hoped we'd had our fill of quick-and-easy, and there was an appetite for the real thing," Jones explains. "I felt the time was right." Jones, it turns out, was correct, and Mastering the Art of French Cooking changed the way millions of Americans ate. More>>

Flex TextEdit's powers
Everyone writes. Whether you draft reports, make grocery lists, or author scholarly works, the tool you use for text may be the most important program on your Mac. Some people need a full-featured word processor, such as Microsoft Word ($239), especially if they use advanced features like revision tracking, comments, or footnotes. But you already have a capable word processor that might fit your needs—Mac OS X's TextEdit. Here are some of the surprisingly advanced things it can do. 1. Work with Word files If you receive Word files from colleagues or friends, and you don't own Microsoft's ubiquitous word processor, TextEdit makes it possible for you to open and in many cases edit those documents. Since OS X 10.3, TextEdit has been able to open and save documents in Word (.doc) format. More>>

Good books on digital photography
There are many good digital photography books available in the market today. Not only are there updated versions of traditional classics (like Bryan Peterson's Learning to See Creatively ), but there are a mountain of books from people who grew up with Adobe Photoshop and waited, sometimes impatiently, for digital cameras to come of age. Two books that I have found to be especially good are Scott Kelby's The Digital Photography Book ($20, Peachpit Press), and Complete Digital Photography , from Ben Long ($40, Charles River Media). If you're looking for a different type of book on the topic, however, it's worth seeking out Stephen Johnson on Digital Photography ($40, O'Reilly), which recently made it to the top of my reading pile. The book is part history, part photographic philosophy, and part tutorial, all delivered in Stephen's inimitable style. More>>
