Thrilling ride for author
She worked in a cake shop, serving well-dressed men and women who would later appear in her books. "I definitely drew on my time in the Cross later on," she said.
Then the war started. The family returned to Queensland to work in an ammunition factory in Brisbane's West End. There she lacquered hand grenades and inserted the pins.
"I loved that job," she said. "Of course the grenades weren't loaded with powder at that time so we were in no danger, but it still felt exciting."
After a year in the job Estelle, then 16, signed up with the American Ambulance Unit in the east Brisbane suburb of Balmoral. There, US soldiers and civilian Australians transported wounded soldiers from the airstrip to hospital.

Mass exodus of jobs from Marin is worst in state
Robert Eyler, an economics professor at Sonoma State University, said a large part of the migration, particularly from San Francisco, may be connected with the popping of the dot-com investment bubble. "If you looked at the data from 1992 to 2000 and didn't stack on 2001 through 2004, the numbers would probably look a lot different," Eyler said.
Attorney Jeff Schoppert, chairman of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, said he was more surprised by San Francisco's 4 percent job loss than Marin's, because San Francisco is so much larger.
"It doesn't take as many people departing in Marin to reach that number," Schoppert said. "If you have Fireman's Fund shipping jobs out of Marin or Fair Isaac, it has a bigger effect."
The study minimizes the effect of interstate migration on job retention statewide, despite the significant percentage of jobs lost in Marin and San Francisco counties. More>>
